Benefits Of A DIY Van Electrical System
Adding a versatile electrical system to your van offers numerous benefits for recreational and commercial users, providing a flexible and efficient way to power essential appliances, tools, and equipment while on the go. One of the key advantages we found when building our electrical system was the ability to customize the system based on our specific requirements. We chose from various components, including batteries, inverters, and charging sources, to create a system that meets our unique needs. Here are some of the benefits we found by taking the time to put together and build our own DIY Van Electrical System.
-
Component Selection
When designing our electrical systems, we have the flexibility to carefully select the essential components based on their technical specifications, energy efficiency, and safety standards. Additionally, we can meticulously plan and implement their installation methods while considering factors such as accessibility, maintenance, and environmental impact. This allows us to strategically determine the optimal locations for these components to ensure efficient and reliable electrical systems.
-
Possibility for Fragmentary or Piecemeal Build
Building a van can be quite expensive due to the various components involved in the process. In order to manage costs effectively, our approach involves initially installing only the essential electrical components. These are basic components vital for the van’s functionality. We plan to gradually incorporate additional important electrical elements into the van as the budget allows. This phased approach allows us to ensure that the van is operational while efficiently managing expenses.
-
Learning a Better Understanding Of RV Electrical
Building your own electrical system offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and expand your technical expertise. This practical endeavor allows you to understand the inner workings of electrical systems, provides insight into problem-solving, and promotes a deeper comprehension of electrical principles. Furthermore, it offers a chance to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world context, fostering a well-rounded understanding of electrical engineering.
-
Easier Troubleshooting
Understanding the entire van build process as an end user can simplify troubleshooting. Knowledge of how the system functions and the details of its construction provides an advantage when addressing any potential issues that may arise. This insight allows for a more in-depth understanding of the system and enables effective problem-solving.
Projects To Build The Electrical System In Our Ram Promaster Van
Bit by bit and project by project, we have slowly progressed towards a complete electrical system that covers all electrical requirements. Below, we have listed all of the projects carried out over the last few years as we slowly built out our van.
Starting With Basic Electrical Components
When building out the components of our Van Electrical System, we started with the two most essential parts, charging and storage. We assembled a basic system to get by using old hardware from a previous project. For charging, we wired a Sure Power battery Separator into the van’s factory upfitter connections.
Portable Power
For temporary storage, we built our DIY Portable Power Station. We found using a Portable Power Station a great way to simplify our setup before designing and completing other electrical system upgrades. Power stations can also be charged via solar power using a low-cost solar controller. We upgraded our custom portable power station with the Renogy Voyager controller and Eclipse solar suitcase. We continue using it regularly as a portable power supply in and out of the house.
Choosing and Installing Batteries
Installing Batteries for our Van came after we built our dinette stage. Utilizing the space under the platform to house two large AGM batteries as part of our Van Battery Bank. Our storage capacity is ample for our intended purpose.
Installing a Renogy 12V DC to DC On-Board Battery Charger
When you’re on the go, you can effectively charge your house batteries by harnessing power from your vehicle’s alternator. We recently installed the Renogy 12V DC to DC On-Board Battery Charger for this purpose.
Power Distribution and Lighting
Everybody has more than one device these days, so to facilitate ease of charging, we decided to install Quick Charge 3.0 USB chargers and 12v sockets. And, by hardwiring and installing USB Chargers and 12v sockets in each corner of the van, we can be sure there will always be a spare USB to plug into.
Most standard van cargo area lighting is dull and not suited for anything more than convenience lighting when entering or exiting the van. Also, the standard cargo lighting is connected to our Van’s start battery, giving another way to be left stranded with a flat battery and no way to start your engine. Because of this, you should seriously consider designing and installing some Van LED Lights as part of your Van Conversion Build.
Monitoring and Troubleshooting
A 12v battery monitor displays the system’s current voltage and usage by monitoring the flow of current in and out of the system. We wanted to know more about the constantly changing power levels to maintain the long-term life expectancy of our batteries.
We installed a Renogy 500A Battery Monitor with a DC Shunt to monitor the 12 Volt Battery Bank capacity in our van.
