To give my flooring a nice clean finished edge, And, to cover up the layers of flooring showing when you open the sliding door, I have installed some step trim.

What Materials Are Available For My Sliding Door Step Trim?

I wanted the finish to look professional, so I narrowed down my choices to the following options.

Vinyl Stair Nosing

Vinyl Stair Nosing was one of my first choices, I ultimately decided against using it because the installation is not really intended for use over the carpet.

Aluminum Angle Bar

Aluminum angle bar is a popular choice for step trim in van conversions. If I had some in my shop I would have used it. The extra labor needed to drill and countersink holes led me to choose the next option for my sliding door step trim.

Aluminum Stair Nosing

Aluminum Stair Nosing is …….. It has a clean professional look. Pre-drilled holes make the install quick and easy. And, it has a tread pattern for added grip when stepping in and out of the van.

How Easy Is It To Install A Van Sliding Door Step Trim?

Tools And Materials Used

Installing A Fascia Board

The layers of flooring raise the floor level up by about 1-½”. To cover up this gap we installed a piece of ¼” Baltic Birch Plywood. Conveniently, this strip was an offcut from our van wall panels.

We with a one-step polyurethane. Before, gluing and screwing in place.

Trimming The Stair Nosing To Fit

We cut the Aluminum Stair Nosing using a Jigsaw, notching out a small section to fit around the middle pillar.

Installation

Install was easily done, by simply screwing in place with #4 x ¾” screws.

Job Well Done

It’s so good to install the final touches to a project and see it all come together so nicely. The floor has been done for a while now and climbing over the unfinished step every day, I don’t know why I didn’t finish this sooner, priorities I guess. It looks clean and professional!
