We built a recessed storage cubbyhole into the Sliding door of our Ram ProMaster.
Now, the upper part of the Ram ProMaster Sliding door does not have any panels trim. So, to make use of this space that would otherwise go unused, we decided to build……
Sliding Door Recessed Cubbyhole Storage
Everyone who has spent any time living the VanLife knows how valuable storage space is. So rather than cover this small void. I figured this would make the perfect place for a small recessed cubby to keep gloves, hats and other soft, lightweight items
This little cubby has actually turned out to be a very convenient place for quick-grab items!
Making The Most Of A Small Space
We needed to build the panel in a way, so as to maximize the pocket size in this narrow door panel void. To do this we built out the panel by one inch. This increased the pocked width to a usable size for storing smaller items.
How We Built This Small Yet Functional Recessed Cubby
Tools And Materials Used
- Jigsaw
- Wood Glue
- ¼’-20 RivNuts
- Hand Rivet Nut Tool
- ¼”-20 x 2’ Machine Screws
- Finishing Washers
- 1×2 Framing Lumber
- ¼” Baltic Birch Plywood
- ⅛” Baltic Birch Plywood
- Varathane Stain Carbon Grey
- Varathane Polyurethane
Framing The Panel With 1×2 Lumber
The main panel section is a piece of ⅛” Baltic Birch, ?”x?”. I had this cut on the panel saw at Windsor Plywood.
The first thing was to glue an outer frame of 1×2 lumber. This will build out the panel and give some more room for the pocket.
Building The Pocket
The pocked section is ¼” Baltic Birch Plywood glued together with some ½”x ½” MDF primed moulding. I would have used ⅛” but, I had some scrap ¼”, so rather than buy a new sheet I just used what I had.
Adding Some Strength And Rigidity
We added a piece of ¼” Baltic Birch Plywood as a trim on top of the ⅛” to give it some rigidity.
Test Fit
The new recessed cubbyhole fits in the sliding door perfectly.
Stain And Seal
We stained this along with our Conversion Van Wall Panels and the facia piece for the Sliding Door Step Trim.
Sliding Door Recessed Cubbyhole Storage – Job Well Done
This small but conveniently located cubby hole has become my go-to place for storing my winter gloves. Along with being a great place for small items, it is actually a great handle to help get enough momentum to close the door.
