Our Choice – The American Lighting Color Changing Neon Flex Light
Coincidentally, after looking at Neon Flex LEDs for quite some time we came across the American Lighting Colour Changing Neon Flex Light at Costco. They have the capability of joining two lengths together to make a total length of 33 feet which allows us to cover the full width of our garage with a small wrap-around at each side. The price is reasonable and the specs match our requirements. With the many great reviews and unbeatable Costco return policy, we decided these would be the best choice. Done deal!

- Staying with the flex-style LED strips we also considered this waterproof LED Strip light from Merkury Innovations. Controllable by a smartphone app and smart speakers. They can sync to music and have multiple different effects.
- Another option we considered is the SuperlightingLED Dream Color LED Flex Light. Also, the app is controllable, and with many settings, this one also could have been a good choice.

Can LED Strip Lights Be Used Outdoors?
Not all LED Strip Lights are rated for outdoor use. Refer to the manufacturer’s specifications for confirmation if your LED Strip Lights can be used outdoors.
How To Install Waterproof LED Strip Lights Outside?
LED Strip lights often come with adhesive backing or clips to allow for simple installation. The problem with adhesive is it regularly comes unstuck, and clips allow for sag between each individual fixture. After brainstorming for a while I decided to use ½” J-Channel Vinyl Siding Trim as a pocket for the flex light strip to sit in.

J-Channel comes in different sizes and materials. Our local Home Depot had ½” J-Channel Vinyl Siding Trim in stock.👍 the vinyl material is easy to cut and comes with pre-punched holes to allow for quick and easy installation.
How Do You Connect Outdoor LED Strip Lights?
American Lighting Color Changing Neon Flex Lights can have a maximum of two lengths connected together using the screw-in connection.
Screw-In Connectors
The screw-in connectors allow for a strong and waterproof connection between the two lengths of the light strip.

- #8 x ½” Truss Head Screws
The How: Step-1 Inspect and Test
Before starting the installation, I unboxed both lighting strips and connected them together for a quick bench test. After confirming they work, I went ahead with mounting the J-Channel.
Step-2 Cut And Mount J-Channel
Our handy miter saw made for easy cutting of the J-Channel Trim. It is important to take care and wear PPE though as it can shatter if cut too quickly. 
Step-3 Place LED Strip Into J-Channel
The Flex light strip fits perfectly into the J-Channel. The two LED ropes are joined at a gap between two lengths of the channel. 
Step-4 Run Power
We ran some basic Christmas light extension cords to power up. A tidy-up will be in the books for some time in the future.
