Let’s Take A Closer Look At Some Great Van Options For Converting As A DIY Campervan
Ford Transit
Ford Camper Vans have been around for decades. When it comes to picking this vehicle as the foundation for your Camper Conversion. The Ford Transit definitely has some major arguments for. There are multiple model configurations to choose from. If you choose the largest model you will get a huge 487.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity. There is a 3.7L V6 power plant as standard with the option of an awesome turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. This is plenty enough power to push your fully loaded Camper Conversion up the largest mountain.

Nissan NV
The next vehicle to consider for your camper van conversion is the Nissan NV. The NV is another van with a rather unique appearance. The front end of this DIY van conversion option is more truck-like than the old snub nose styles of the past. Another option that sets this van apart is the 5.6-liter V8. This engine that puts out 375 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque give this model a class leading 9,500 pounds of towing capacity. Van conversions made with this model would be perfect for towing a second vehicle or trailer full of off-road toys.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
The third and most common van used for camper conversions is the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The largest of the Sprinter selections has 530.0 cu ft of cargo volume. This is unmatched in this class of van. Another point to add is the 4×4 option. This would be a great addition if you plan on venturing off the beaten path with your campervan conversion. One thing that is repeated over and over is the high cost of ownership on the Sprinter. This is true, but if it is in your budget the sprinter would be one of the better choices for the best van for camping conversion.

Ram Promaster
The Ram Promaster stands out in this class of vehicle due to its unique front wheel drive configuration. This allows the Promaster to offer the lowest in class load floor height. Wayfarer Vans have chosen the Promaster as their preferred base vehicle. If you are interested, Wayfarer Vans have a van to camper conversion kit to make your camper van conversion a bit easier. The Ram’s 3.6-liter gasoline V6 engine delivers a nice 280 hp and 260 ft-lbs of torque. My choice for the best van for camping conversion.
Personally, I have chosen to use the Ram Promaster as the foundation for my family’s camper conversion van. We plan to use it as a daily drive to get kids to sports practice as well as an easy way to get out of town for the weekend or longer. For this reason, we ordered the 136″ wheelbase. Another plus, Ram offers the Promaster with the option of swivel seats to simplify our buildout. Finally, living in a colder climate the front wheel drive will come into its own when Old Man Winter comes knocking.
I hope this helps you decide the best van for you.
