Installing a mini-safe in our van. Automobile break-ins are nothing new and tradespeople have been dealing with theft for as long as there have been skilled trades. Whether thefts are actually increasing Or, now that #vanlife is becoming more and more socialized, you just hear about it more often. One thing is for sure, you need some way to secure your valuables within your van.

Install A Mini Safe In Our Van
What Mini Safe To Use In Our Van?
The location we chose is very small and quite difficult to access for installation. This narrows down our choices. We found this Mini Safe on Amazon which is only 0.2 cubic feet. This will be perfect!
Location – Where to Install Our Mini Safe?
Ideally, you would have your safe inside a cabinet hidden away from prying eyes 👀, but for us, this is not possible. We found the most useful place would be under the rear seat in an otherwise wasted space. In this location, it is easy to use and not ”so” easy to see if peeking in through one of the windows. We may put some type of cover over it in the future.
Installation Hardware – How to Secure Our Mini Safe?
The next thing to think about was how we would secure the Safe into place. After thinking 🤔 for a bit, we settled on using two angle brackets and ¼” bolts and Torx Head Lag Bolts.
Tools And Materials
- Compact Digital Safe
- Torx Head Lag Bolts
- Torx Drive Bit
- ¼”-20 X ¾” Bolts
- ¼”-20 Nylon Lock Nuts
Step-1 Bolt The Brackets To The Safe
Conveniently, the bracket holes lined up perfectly with the safe’s pre-drilled mounting holes!
Step-2 Screw The Safe Into Place
We held the safe in places using a quick grip clamp, then screwed it down with the Torx Head Lag Bolts.
Lock it or Lose it
Ever heard the saying “locks only stop honest people”? If a thief was determined and had enough time, of course, they could get into it, so ultimately we are just trying to prevent a smash-and-grab.
That being said, this little safe will be perfect for cash, small valuables, and important documents like passports. But for now, my son is using it to store his prized hot wheels cars 🚗.
