Why Spincast?
Prerequisite To An Intro Into Baitcasters
Having grown up using baitcasting reels, primarily the ABU Garcia Ambassadeur, I wanted to introduce my kids to the same types of reels. Baitcaster reels are tricky even for adults to learn, so rather than have them struggle a baitcaster, I decided to start them with a Spincast reel and progress to a baitcaster as they get older.
Choosing The Best Short Spincast Combo
Thrift Store Kids Fishing Rod
Browsing my local thrift store I happened to come across a couple of kids Spincast Rod Reel Combos. Priced at $2 and $1.50 respectively, I picked them up to try and the hook was set.
Another Spincast Combo We Considered
While the Kids Spincast Rod Reel Combos were a good starting point, they are mediocre in features and quality. With only two line guides, no adjustable drag, and a fixed reel, there are many better options for small Spincast Rod Reel Combos.
Zebco Dock Demon
The first of the better options we considered was the Zebco Dock Demon. With upgraded features like dial-adjustable drag and a durable fiberglass rod, the Zebco Dock Demon was our first choice. We had actually purchased two Dock Demons, but after physically comparing the Dock Demon and the Pitchin Stik we decided to return the Zebco and go with the Shakespeare.

- Our quiver of Pitchin Stiks have proven themselves to be durable. After several drops and bangs, they haven’t broken or show signs of damage.

- Coming pre-spooled with 6 lb lines makes it ready to use out of the box. No need to add line or upgrade as the test strength is good for the intended purpose.

What It’s Like To Use The Shakespeare Pitchin Stik
Using the Pitchin Stik is a lot of fun.
While it’s definitely not an ultralight bait slinger, and best suited to lobbing slightly heavier baits and sinkers, it does cast lightweight tackle with some technique.
