We built a rolling storage frame for our Roofnest Falcon XL Rooftop Tent. Before actually using our Rooftop Tent we had figured we would leave the tent on the roof full time. I changed my mind about this pretty quickly after driving around for a season.
To best utilize space and to make it easy to move, we built this…
Rooftop Tent Rolling Storage
The footprint of a Roofnest Falcon XL is big, about the size of a compact vehicle.
The Problem
Laying flat on the floor, the tent takes up a lot of space. We tried to make it mobile by adding some wheels. This did make it easier to move around, the tent is still huge and takes up too much space.
The Solution
Decided to build a simple frame to hold the rooftop tent upfront. We would also add wheels to make it easy to move around.
Rooftop Tent Rolling Storage – Parts and Materials
- Chop Saw
- Drill
- 2×4 lumber
- 2×2 lumber
- Construction Screws

- Swivel Plate Caster Wheels
- Lag Screw Eye Bolts
- Ratchet Straps

The first step was to cut the lumber. Two uprights, two bottom pieces, two stiffeners, and two structural supports.
We connected the stiffeners two the bottom pieces, the uprights to the bottom pieces, and then installed the support pieces. All connections are glued and screwed.
Next up, stain and seal. Two coats of Varathane OneStep.
Install the wheels and Lag Eye Screws and it’s done.
The Stand’s Up! ✅
In the standing position, the tent takes up much less room. This also gives us easy access to the bottom side which will help with planning for modifications and changes to the van’s unistrut roof rack
