Ram ProMaster Mud Flap Repair. Salt road de-icer has rusted away the bolts that hold our mud flaps and splash guards on our ProMaster.
In this post, we document how we repair the mud flaps ready for another slushy winter.
Ram ProMaster Mud Flap Repair
If you live somewhere with harsh winters, then you have no doubt noticed relatively new vehicles full of rust. Salt is great for de-icing roads, but it wreaks havoc on vehicles. Untreated metal rusts so quickly.
The Problem
The rear mud flaps are held on a pinch weld clamp with some type of metal rivet. It shows just how corrosive the road salts are as the rivets had completely rusted through leaving both rear mud flaps hanging by a top screw.
Ram ProMaster Mud Flap Repair – The Fix
After a quick inspection, I figured it would be easy to fasten the clamp assembly with some new ¼” bolts.
Disassembly
Smaller bolts can easily shear off. So to prevent problems, the first thing I did was spray the pinch weld clamp bolts with Rust Penetrating Lubricant (WD 40) and leave it for the night.
Drill and Bolt
To allow the new bolts to fit, we drilled out the old rivets with a ¼” drill bit. Then bolted back together using ¼-20 x ¾ Bolts, Nuts with Flat Washers, and Split Lock Washers.
Anti-Seize
To help prevent threads from seizing, we use Silver Grade Anti-Seize on the Pinch Weld Clamp bolt threads.

Hi Ben, Sorry for the comment that’s not at all related to this post. I just found your page and it’s awesome!! (I’ll be reading your unistrut roof writeup next, I just scanned it and your already saving me money). but I don’t see any contract info so commenting on a super recent post seems like my best bet. What led me here is I’m just about to order a Promaster to build into a full time tiny home. I want to go with the granite crystal metallic, The only thing holding me back is concern with heat from the sun vs white.. If you could share any thoughts it would be much appreciated! Thanks!
