Parking Heater Maintenance. Coming from a Mechanical Service background has taught me the importance of Preventative Maintenance to limit any unexpected downtime of important equipment.
In this post, we inspect and replace suspect parts on our Vans Parking Heater System
Parking Heater Maintenance
Road Salts and Rust
The Winters in Calgary can be harsh at times. Given that, the City (IMO) does a great job of keeping the roads clear. I mean, there are times where it is just too cold and snowy, but overall the roads stay in a safe driving condition, provided you actually drive to the conditions!
One of the main tools City road crews use to keep winter roads clear of ice is salt.
One problem with using salt on roads is how damaging it is to vehicles. Vehicles less than ten years old are regularly found to be pitted with rust. That being said, a vehicle with rust is better than one destroyed in an accident after you or someone else loses control on icy roads.

Shut Off Fuel and Power
The first thing to do when completing any maintenance tasks, Shut Off The Fuel and Power. When first installing our heater we put in an In-line Fuel Shut Off Valve behind the fuel tank access panel. This has turned out to be 👍
Rusted Fuel Hose Clamps
The first thing I noticed when completing a maintenance inspection of our parking heater was the Rusted Fuel Hose Clamps. What better time to change them out to a quality Stainless Steel Fuel Injection Hose Clamp.
New Fuel Filter
The Fuel Filter was also visibly degraded. Also, the instruction manual suggests replacement after 24 months. We will change it with one of these similar Inline Fuel Filters.
Floor Mount Plate Bracket
As part of our parking heater installation, we used a Floor Mount Plate Bracket (also commonly referred to as a Turret Plate) The Hose clamps in this area haven’t been affected near as bad as the others. But you can see the Mount itself has started to rust. Not much I can do about this.
I will say though, better the bracket rusting than the van floor though😀😀😀
Exhaust Pipe and Muffler Inspection
A quick look over the exhaust system for holes or excessive rust. Looks good for another season.
Replace Parts and Test
After replacing the rusted hose clamps and suspect fuel filter, we successfully tested the unit, and are now ready for another winter.
