With the floor insulation and plywood subfloor in now, it’s time for some camper van carpet. We had a few different flooring options to choose from. Carpet, carpet tile, and faux wood vinyl tile. We chose to go with an indoor/outdoor hard wearing carpet for our camper van.

Camper Van Carpet
Campervan Flooring Choices
We considered using some free options with flooring materials left over from some previous projects.
We had a nice foam back to carpet tile.
This would have great insulation and soundproofing properties but the installation it’s a little labor-intensive.
We also had some fake wood vinyl tile.
This looks like a hard wearing surface but not what we’re looking for. Although, we may use this for the planned stage between the front and rear seating.
After looking at the carpet section in Home Depot, we just decided to go with a hard wearing indoor-outdoor waterproof carpet. It is not free but at less than $100 to cover the floor of the van this is a good bet.
How To Install Camper Van Carpet
Not quite a How To Install Camper Van Carpet, more a How We Installed.
Initially, we had thought about leaving the carpet free floating. But ultimately we decided to just use a spray adhesive and glue it down one can of 3M 77 contact adhesive covered the full area.
The three pieces of plywood subfloor were pulled out of the van. The carpet was glued on with a little overhang and the excess was trimmed off with a utility knife. We cut out holes for the tie downs and RIB seat. As well as a hole for the for the future heater installation.

At this point, to prevent the insulation compressing below the subfloor, I also installed a spacer on the tie down bolts. ⅜ copper tubing cut to lengths of 1-¾.
Leftover Carpet – Camper Van Floor Mats
We trimmed the leftover carpet offcuts into perfectly shaped camper van floor mats. Unfortunately, because the carpet lacks rigidity, they slide and bunch up. Further design engineering is needed.
Final Thoughts
For our intended use of the van, I think the carpet will work well. Time will tell how durable and it is.
